He constantly uses run-sentences that are exhaustively long. The dialogue, especially between the protagonist and love interest, just feels stilted and unnatural, like something from Tommy Wisseau's film The Room! I am a fan of WW1 era stories but this one feels pretty shallow. I do feel like I am missing something about why he is considered such an amazing author, is it just because his style is so different that it feels special?

His characters often read to me as superficial, as if they are playing a farce. But isn't this Hemingway? Apologies to those who adore him, but reading this book I kept thinking "dick lit". The character of Catherine reads as a stereotypical female, but I think this has more to do with his problem writing dialog for women. It makes me wonder how well he listened to women. In Catherine, he reveals a woman caught, limited by her position as a woman while working in a war zone. Clearly she is courageous, willing to break the rules, but her dialog is so vapid we never get to see what she's made of.

Its one of those slow paced easy to read book ( I was hoping for a food for thought kinda book though) anyhoo… is it just me or … when you read catherine's dialogue they feel totally fake… like you can't picture her character… she sounds intense but totally unpredictable … and than you are like oh probably the author didn't knew how women think or will react?
